I'm aware this is shockingly late, but we have valentines bento for all to see :) This is the 'Pretty, pretty princess' bento, complete with butterflies and a golden crown. There are pork siu mai, some carrot and burdock/gobo kinpira, a little kangaroo steak, dipping sauce (for the dumplings) and an instant miso soup in the right tier, the rice is mixed with some kinpira, the egg offcuts (from the butterflies) and sesame seeds, the whole is topped in nori and egg sheet crown and butterflies.

Really sorry, the weathers been up the left here, the power and internet have been on the fritz, so today we are playing catchup. Apologies. Friday - Steamed rice with seaweed furikake, egg, spiced sausage and broccoli. Monday - Vegetarian spaghetti with mature cheddar (special request from the Giant)
Met up with my family today, so no bento, more tomorrow though :) Today's lunches consisted of one bento and one sit-in lunch at home. When I'm having my lunch in the house I prefer to have it on a plate, mostly because I can heat it up and have a nice warm meal. Above we have my lunch for today, as you can see its not a bento, it was however delicious. I decided to use up some of the tasty treats I had in the fridge, what better way to do that than chirashi sushi/chirashizushi? (not 100% sure which way would be best to write it) First step was mixing the freshly steamed rice with a little salt, sugar and rice vinegar. Then I added all the tasty toppings, I used flaked salmon, cocktail prawns, peas and mangetout/snow peas. The giant's bento really cheered him up today, I included some of his favourite foods. He has a bed of rice topped with nori, sliced boiled egg, baby carrots and ham slices quickly tossed in teriyaki sauce and sesame seeds.
Fried rice, with peas, onions and mushrooms. Topped with teriyaki chicken, sticky and delicious. The giant opted for plain rice and covered it with pulled pork shoulder (from my little freezer stash) with grated cheese and my home-made BBQ sauce I desperately need to get a digital camera, between the two phones I'm getting the majority of my bentos online, but I would prefer them to look a little more professional and less 'I grabbed a few snaps before throwing this in my bag...'
Clockwise from top left we have green grapes, cheese (mature cheddar mmmmm...), baby-corn, mushroom and ham stir-fry, broccoli, ginger/soy/chilli rice noodles, pickled onions and fried broccoli stalk. Really filling bento today, I couldn't finish it all...
Here we have a case of 'what have I got left in the damn fridge?' added to 'oh no! I'm late!' Lunch therefore is a little boring. On the left we have green grapes, mushrooms fried in soy sauce and pickled onions (really have to buy more of those), and the right has steamed broccoli and some sliced ham.
What can I say? It filled a hole, but I wouldn't rave about it, and I don't plan on having the same thing again any-time soon... Also bad photo is bad... Smaller lunch today (I have plans for a big dinner), from the top we have ham and cheese roll-ups, orange jelly, green grapes, cherries and a chocolate treat.
Tried a calorie count for this one; 2 slices ham - 190cal 2 slices cheese - 140cal sugar-free jelly - 8cal each fruit - 40cal total treat - 56cal Total - 442cal approx Not as low as I thought it would be as the ham and cheese brought it up, but not as bad as some of the lunches I have been eating lately. (cal I got either from the packets or ) Catch up from Thursday as well as todays' bentos, double the fun. Above we have mixed vegetable stir-fry (mushroom, broccoli and bean sprouts), a ham and cheese roll-up, cherries, and plum and apple slices (dipped in some lemon juice). The giant got a bunch of mini quiches in silicone bun cases, they were filled with cheddar and broccoli. Today I munched my way through more of the stir-fry from the day before, cherries (again), grapes and carrot sticks. Once it was all cut up I realised that the little stack of sticks doesn't even look like a half portion but there's a whole carrot in there. I also packed myself a little dessert. I made up mini jellies in the silicone bun cases (sugar free) The giant just got sandwiches for himself today, so no picture. The top bento had a little ham, but the other two are vegetarian (even the jelly!).
Also today is the first proper snow of the year in my area, absolutely freezing! And of course our heating oil ran out this morning, currently not amused. Fingers crossed we will get a delivery on Monday, until then wish me luck. Above we have my lunch, having a low carb day today to try and cope with my extra weight from the holidays. In the top tier (left to right), blueberries, ham and cheese roll-ups and red grapes. Bottom tier contains golden kiwi, broccoli, mushrooms fried in soy sauce with sesame seeds, and carrot sticks as my starch. The mostly raw lunch really perked me up today, even though I found that I could only eat half of it, just not as hungry as I thought I would be today. Knowing me I'm going to be ravenous come dinner because of it though. This is the giants' lunch, extra long day at work today so he gets an extra big lunch with snacks in. Left to right we have ham and cheese roll-ups, a mini cheese and broccoli quiche, an apple, two more quiches, roasted pork sandwiches and a two egg tamagoyaki. The quiches and ham and cheese rolls are for snacks and the remainder is for his lunch, he snapped the pic quickly on his phone before running off to work. Fingers crossed he enjoyed it, just have to wait until he gets home tonight and find out then.
